Making Drop Ship Product Sourcing and EBay Work for You–6 Essential Tips

Tip #1

Can drop shipping harm your eBay business? Possibly IF you are planning on selling mass market consumer goods to the public. The reason is that eBay is already a wholesale selling environment. That means that most prices on eBay are generally either at wholesale or below wholesale. This, in turn, means that if you, as a reseller, purchase goods from a wholesaler at wholesale prices, then your starting eBay price will probably be at or above most of the other prices already showing on eBay. Your chance of breaking even, especially after eBay and PayPal fees are applied, is very, very slim.

Tip #2

Collectors are vital to eBay and could be a boon to your auctions. Collectors are people willing to take the time and effort and to spend the money to acquire a particular object of fascination. This could be oriental carpets, vintage Grateful Dead tickets, or antique model railroad trains. Collectors pay handsome prices for objects that often seem ordinary and lackluster to anyone else. Best of all, collector’s items are often found in ordinary locations, such as yard sales, junk shops, and even pawn shops. To get an idea of items in demand, you could log on to Internet forums for collectors and listen in on the kinds of things people are seeking and value.

Tip #3

One suggestion to get started selling consumer electronics is to set up an account with a true electronics wholesaler who also offers drop shipping. One example of such a company would be WYNIT. Again, even though I have done business with WYNIT, I am not recommending them but merely using them as an example. WYNIT is one of the largest wholesalers of consumer electronics in the United States and also offers drop shipping as an additional service to its retail customers. There is no additional fee for drop shipping, and they will even provide you with a data feed for your ecommerce site. Because they are a true wholesaler, you would be required to have a sales tax permit in order to purchase wholesale goods from them.

Tip #4

Here are your best eBay products supply sources that will make your auctions a success: (1) second hand shops, (2) retail merchandise that has been liquidated, (3) live auctions, (4) your neighbors’ junk items, (5) garage sales, (6) estate sales, (7) your own second and cast-off items from your attic, (8) parts taken off of otherwise non-functioning appliances, such as old vacuum cleaners, washing machines and junked cars, (9) thrift shops, (10) yard sales.

Tip #5

Are all of those other businesses offering discounted goods bogus if they are not true wholesalers? No, not at all. It just means that they are not licensed wholesalers. There is no scam involved unless they claim to be a legitimate wholesale company but do not require you sales tax permit. Now, selling goods to people who want to drop ship items from an ecommerce site is big business, and many of those sites will use language to suggest that they are wholesalers without ever coming right out saying it. In the end, if the site does not ask for a tax permit, it is not a real wholesaler. Keep in mind that it is up to you to read the site’s promo and terms of service carefully so that you understand exactly what it is. In many cases, you’ll find very good deals from these discount retailers. Further, some businesses specialize in liquidated stock, second hand items, and surplus of overstock items. They are all legitimate but none use a wholesale license and none require a sales tax permit.

Tip #6

There are two problems that most beginners come up against. First, how to find products, or how to figure out what products to sell. Second, how to find suppliers. The reality is that these are not hard problems to solve, though they may seem so at first. The fact is, and you may not believe this, but these issues begin to take care of themselves when you do business planning. The first step to take is often to figure out and draft a business plan. For example, who are your customers? What niche are you trying to satisfy? What kind of business model do you plan to employ? When you begin to tackle these sorts of question, other questions regarding sourcing and products will begin to make sense.
